ADDITIONAL ROOF VENT

Perhaps one of the most regrettable features of my van, is the fact that none of the fixed rear windows can be opened. Rather than replace these I decided to instal an additional roof vent. I chose a Fiamma 160, (available from Rainbow conversions -around £50) which offers permanent ventilation even whilst closed and can be fully opened, yet has the protection of mosquito netting. Permanent ventilation is a valuable safety feature - offering protection against the build up of carbon monoxide created during cooking.

The position of the new vent was initially cut in the inner plywood skin of the van (ensuring that it would align externally without interfering with any roof struts). Then the rear hole was cut using a jig saw.

The roof vent fits perfectly (which is nice !!!). It sits very proud in places because if the roof profile so a rubber seal has been made and the whole job sealed using auto window seal - other silicon based sealant tend not to be flexible enough to accommodate roof vibration. Internally a wooden frame was built around the vent and then recovered using the original fabric. I have since purchased an additional small round vent, to be fitted in the shower cubicle at a later date.
